From dhow yards to Creek side towers: how Al Jaddaf took shape

Al Jaddaf takes its name from the Arabic for rower, and for generations it was where Dubai's wooden dhows were built and repaired on the banks of the Creek. Some of that boat building tradition still continues, but the district has been transformed into a freehold residential and cultural quarter, anchored by the Mohammed bin Rashid Library on the waterfront.

The area divides into distinct pockets. Culture Village, or Jaddaf Waterfront, lines the Creek with mid rise towers such as Nastaran and Niloofar, the low rise Manazel Al Khor, the boutique Volna by Kasco on the canal, and the Palazzo Versace hotel and residences. Sama Al Jadaf sits in the centre, and the Healthcare City Phase 2 cluster to the south holds dense rows of newer towers from Binghatti and Azizi, plus Kempinski Residences The Creek at the southern tip facing Ras Al Khor.

Getting around Al Jaddaf: metro, healthcare, culture and shopping

Few districts are as central. Two Green Line stations cover the northern half, Al Khail Road and Oud Metha Road run along the edges, and the Business Bay Crossing leads straight towards Downtown. Healthcare is a particular strength, with a major public hospital in the district and Dubai Healthcare City just north.

  • •Culture Village towers are mostly a 500 to 700 m walk from either Al Jadaf or Creek station on the Green Line.
  • •Latifa Hospital, the Dubai Health hospital for women and children, is on Oud Metha Street in Al Jaddaf.
  • •For private care, Mediclinic City Hospital in Dubai Healthcare City is roughly 2 km from the newer southern towers.
  • •The Mohammed bin Rashid Library sits on the Creek, about 0.6 km from Nastaran Tower.
  • •Shopping is split between Wafi Mall, 1.7 to 2 km from the southern cluster, and Dubai Festival City Mall, about 1.2 km across the Creek from Palazzo Versace.
  • •Dubai International Airport Terminal 1 is about 2.6 km from Culture Village, and The Dubai Mall about 4 km from Healthcare City Phase 2.
