How to Cancel a UAE Visa Online: Family & Dependants

You cancel a residence visa when the reason for it ends. The common triggers are leaving the country for good, changing employer or ending a sponsorship.

If you move to a new job, your current visa has to be cancelled before the new employer can complete your new residence visa. Changing sponsor works the same way, for example moving from an employer visa to your own investor or property visa.

Family sponsors cancel when a spouse or child leaves the UAE permanently, or when their own status changes. A visa left open after its purpose has ended can bring overstay fines and problems with future applications, so deal with it promptly and check the current rules first.

Whoever sponsors the visa cancels it. For a standard work visa, your employer cancels the labour contract and work permit through MOHRE, then the residence visa and Emirates ID.

For a self-sponsored visa, such as an investor, property owner or Golden Visa, you are your own sponsor and you start the cancellation yourself, through a licensed typing centre or the GDRFA and ICP channels.

For a family visa, the main visa holder files the cancellation for each dependant. Most people submit through an approved typing centre, an Amer service centre in Dubai, or the official online portals.

The steps vary by visa type and emirate, but the order stays the same. For a work visa, the employer cancels the MOHRE work permit first, then submits the residence visa cancellation to GDRFA (Dubai) or ICP (other emirates). The immigration system expects the labour cancellation before the residence cancellation, and filing them out of order can get the request rejected.

Expect to provide the original passport or a clear copy, the residence visa page, the Emirates ID, and copies of the sponsor's passport and Emirates ID. Employment visas may also need signed cancellation or labour paperwork.

Once approved, the authority issues an official cancellation document, often by email, confirming the date, the visa category and the start of your grace period. Keep it safe: it proves the visa was formally cancelled.

Fees, forms and timelines change from year to year and differ between emirates. Confirm the current cost and paperwork with GDRFA, ICP or your typing centre before you pay anything.

If you sponsor family members, cancel their visas before your own. Immigration will not finalise the main sponsor's cancellation while active dependant visas are still linked to it.

For each dependant, submit their passport copy, visa copy and Emirates ID, with the sponsor's passport and Emirates ID. A dependant inside the UAE may get a cancellation note stamped in their passport. For a dependant outside the country, you can often complete the request online.

Missing a dependant visa is a common and expensive mistake. That family member can build up overstay fines or end up with a blocked Emirates ID, and your own cancellation stalls. Plan the order before you start.

You do not have to leave on the day your residence visa is cancelled. UAE rules give you a grace period to exit the country or move onto a new legal status.

Its length depends on your visa type. For Dubai residence permits, GDRFA Dubai states a grace period of 60 days after cancellation or expiry. At federal level, the ICP sets grace periods from 30 to 180 days by category, with 90 days for skilled workers and 180 days for Golden, Green and Blue residence holders.

The count runs in calendar days, weekends and public holidays included, and your exact number is printed on your cancellation record. Stay past it and daily fines start, so work from the date on your own document and confirm the current rule with the authorities.

Before you leave or switch status, close the commitments tied to your residency: settle and end your tenancy contract, close DEWA and other utility accounts, clear and if needed close bank accounts and credit cards, and cancel telecom and other subscriptions. Unpaid debts and fines can cause serious trouble at the airport or when you next return.

Your Emirates ID is cancelled with the visa, and dependant Emirates IDs follow the same route. Keep copies of everything.

Then check that the cancellation went through. You can see the status online through the ICP or GDRFA channels; keep the official cancellation document as evidence.
