Dubai teaches an unusually wide range of systems. The four largest are British (National Curriculum for England, leading to IGCSE and A-Levels), American (a US high school diploma, often with AP options), the International Baccalaureate (PYP, MYP and the Diploma Programme) and Indian (CBSE and ICSE). Together they cover most pupils.

Beyond the big four you can choose French (leading to the Baccalaureat), German and other national systems, plus the UAE Ministry of Education (MOE) curriculum. A family moving from London, New York, Mumbai or Paris can often keep their child on the same academic track, which makes a later move or university application easier.

Choose a curriculum for continuity and for destination. If your child is likely to apply to UK universities, a British or IB route fits; for US colleges, the American diploma with AP or the IB works well. Think a few years ahead, not only about next year.

KHDA is Dubai's education regulator. It licenses private schools, oversees fee frameworks and, through its inspection arm, publishes a quality rating for each school: Outstanding, Very Good, Good, Acceptable or Weak.

Inspections cover pupils' achievement and progress, personal development, teaching and assessment, the curriculum, safeguarding and wellbeing, and leadership and management. The report is public, so you can read the detail behind a headline rating.

For 2026, note that KHDA has at times paused or adjusted its full inspection cycle, so some published ratings date from an earlier year. Use the rating as one input, then visit in person, talk to current parents and read the latest report. A high rating does not mean a school is right for your child.

Fees vary enormously, so read these bands as broad guides for 2026. Budget schools, often Indian or other national curricula, start from around AED 3,000 to AED 20,000 a year. Mid-market schools, Good to Very Good British, American or IB options, sit around AED 20,000 to AED 60,000. Premium and Outstanding-rated schools run from about AED 60,000 to more than AED 100,000, and a few go higher still.

By curriculum: Indian CBSE and ICSE schools are the most affordable, around AED 7,000 to AED 25,000. British schools span a very wide range, roughly AED 20,000 to AED 110,000 depending on school and year. American schools fall somewhere in between, and the IB, especially the senior Diploma years, sits at the upper end.

Two things move your actual bill: the school you pick and the year group. Senior and exam years almost always cost more than early years. The numbers change every academic year, so get the current fee schedule from each school.

Curriculum and positioning drive fees most. An established British or IB school with a strong record and heavy demand costs well above a value-focused school teaching the same curriculum.

KHDA rating and reputation matter too. Outstanding and Very Good schools can charge more, though some excellent schools stay reasonably priced. Facilities weigh heavily: campuses with pools, theatres, science labs and large sports grounds cost more to run, and you pay for that.

Fees also rise with the year group, and teacher-to-pupil ratios and location within Dubai play a part. Newer schools sometimes offer introductory pricing to build enrolment, which is worth a look if the school suits your child.

Tuition is only part of the bill. Expect a one-off application or registration fee of around AED 500 to a few thousand dirhams, and often a seat-acceptance deposit equal to part of a term's fees. Some deposits are non-refundable and some are offset against later tuition, so check the terms.

Recurring extras include uniform (around AED 1,500 to AED 3,000), books and devices, and school transport, which runs from roughly AED 5,000 to AED 12,000 a year depending on distance. Some schools charge separately for lunches, trips, exam entry and after-school activities.

Transferring a child into Dubai also brings small admin costs, such as attesting and processing previous school records. Add a buffer on top of the headline tuition to cover all of this.

The most in-demand schools and year groups (reception, the start of primary, and Year 7 or its equivalent) carry waiting lists. Apply 6 to 12 months before your intended start if you can. Most schools accept overseas applications, so you can join a waiting list before you arrive.

The main academic year starts in late August or early September, with a second common entry point in January, so plan your move around those windows. Admissions involve an application, an assessment or age-appropriate entry check, and payment of the registration fee and deposit to secure the place.
